(México City) – Hundreds of National Legislators from the vast majority of countries in the hemisphere have observed in recent years with great concern that the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights weaken the rule of law and legitimacy of the Inter-American Judicial System with decisions against Democracy, Sovereignty, and social fabric of member countries of the Organization.
“We acknowledge and applaud the importance of the OAS as a mediating body that ensures the democratic stability of countries in the region and respect for human rights, but at the same time we are concerned that it is being used as a tool to advance hidden agendas of certain Ideological elites that are detrimental to the sovereignty of our countries, “said José Antonio Kast, president of the Organizing Committee when he officially announced the event in Mexico City.
“We are deeply concerned that the OAS, the Commission and the Court, through their policies, rules and decisions, continue to usurp obligations that are unique and exclusive to the legislative and judicial institutions of our countries on issues like the right to life, marriage and family. These actions are putting the legitimacy and credibility of the Inter-American Human Rights System at risk. ” Cong. Kast added
“We have convened this First Congress of National Legislators for June 15 in Mexico City in the preamble of the OAS General Assembly, to discuss these issues in depth in order to reverse this movement and reach a joint declaration that strengthens the rule of law and to make sure the (OAS) continue to work within the framework for which it was created. “
